Traveling overseas adds even more possibilities to ensure traveling is really exciting for the whole family. Plan to learn a bit of the native language before you leave, so kids and adults can converse with people you meet during your trip. Find out the exchange rate to see how much money you’ll need to have on hand. And, of course, look into various destinations to get you off the normal tourist routes and into more authentic areas of the country. Don’t forget to try the local food–it would be a shame to go all the way to Spain or France, for example, and not try the best of the local cuisine.

Don’t forget to find out the background and history of your destination. Learning about the past in another state or another country can make your trip even more meaningful. Many historical sites are off the beaten path and not well-publicized, so hunting them up can give you more unique places to visit, where you’ll see and experience things most tourists never find.

The more you put into planning your travel experience, the more fun and exciting it’s likely to be. And if you plan your own itinerary, not only will your visit be unique, but you’ll avoid many of the more expensive tourist destinations, and make your trip much more affordable.
